David K. Stone, Chairman
David Stone is the Founder and Managing Director of Liberty Tree Advisors, LLC, a consulting firm that helps emerging life sciences companies grow. He was a Venture Advisor, Managing Director and Partner at Flagship Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm, from 2000 to 2007. A veteran of Wall Street, Mr. Stone followed the Biotechnology sector for nearly ten years at Cowen & Company, where he built a highly regarded research and investment banking practice. Mr. Stone began his career in biotechnology in 1983 as a Project Manager and later Communications Director at Genetics Institute (now part of Wyeth Pharmaceuticals). He earned a B.S. in Microbiology from Colorado State University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Gregory B. Brown, M.D.
With a background that includes over two decades of clinical, operating and healthcare investment experience, Dr. Brown joined the Oscient Board in 2006. Currently, Dr. Brown is a Founder and Managing Director of Cowen Healthcare Royalty Partners. Previously, Dr. Brown was a Partner at Paul Capital Partners, an established member of the global private equity community. Previously, Dr. Brown worked at Adams, Harkness & Hill, where he served as the co-head of investment banking, and at Vector Securities International. Before receiving his business degree, Dr. Brown was a practicing thoracic and vascular surgeon. He earned his MBA from Harvard Business School, his M.D. from SUNY Upstate Medical Center, and his AB from Yale College.
Robert J. Hennessey
Mr. Hennessey served as CEO of Oscient Pharmaceuticals from 1993-2000. Prior to joining the Company in March 1993, Mr. Hennessey served as President of Hennessey & Associates, Ltd., a private consulting firm in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. From 1980 to 1990, he served as a Corporate Vice President of Sterling Drug, Inc., a pharmaceutical company, in charge of strategic planning, acquisitions and licensing. Prior to Sterling Drug, Inc., Mr. Hennessey was Director, International Strategic Planning and Business Development at Abbott Laboratories, Inc., Managing Director, Biologicals of SmithKline Beecham Corporation and Director, International Business Development at Merck & Co., Inc., all of which are pharmaceutical companies. Mr. Hennessey currently serves on the Board of Directors for Penwest Pharmaceuticals Co. and holds a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Connecticut.
John R. Leone
Mr. Leone, a Partner at Paul Capital Healthcare, has over 30 years of pharmaceutical industry experience. Most recently, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of Cambrex Corporation, a life sciences company committed to accelerating the discovery and commercialization of human therapeutics. Previously, Mr. Leone was at Aventis, where he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of U.S. Commercial Operations. Among other initiatives, Mr. Leone spearheaded the successful integration of Aventis' predecessor companies, Rhone-Poulenc Rorer and Hoechst Marion Roussel. His industry experience also includes both domestic and international management roles with Pfizer and Wyeth. Mr. Leone currently serves on the board of directors at Viropharma and Forticell Bioscience. Mr. Leone received his B.S. degree in Engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and his M.B.A. from the University of Colorado.
William R. Mattson, Jr.
Mr. Mattson joined Oscient Pharmaceuticals' Board of Directors in 2006 and is the co-founder and Chairman Emeritus of The Mattson Jack Group, a healthcare consulting firm he established in 1986. Previously, Mr. Mattson worked for Monsanto as Director of Marketing Development and subsequently at Monsanto's subsidiary Searle Pharmaceuticals as Area Vice President. Mr. Mattson began his career at Abbott Laboratories where he served in various roles in business development, finance, sales and marketing and general management. Currently, Mr. Mattson is a member of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy Board of Trustees. Mr. Mattson graduated from Loyola University (Chicago) with an MBA in Marketing and received his undergraduate degree in Accounting from Bradley University.
Gary Patou, M.D.
Dr. Patou is a Managing Director at MPM Capital and has been a member of Oscient's Board of Directors since 2005. Dr. Patou also currently serves as the interim Chief Medical Officer at Peplin, Inc., a development stage specialty pharmaceutical company. Previously, Dr. Patou was Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Oscient following the merger with GeneSoft Pharmaceuticals in 2004. As President of Genesoft, Dr. Patou was instrumental in applying for and obtaining FDA approval of the Company's lead antibiotic product, FACTIVE. Prior to joining Genesoft, Dr. Patou worked at SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, now a unit of GlaxoSmithKline, as a Senior Vice President & Director, Project and Portfolio Management, managing all of the company's pharmaceutical development projects, including FACTIVE. Dr. Patou also served as Director and Vice President of Anti-Infective Development where he managed the development of a broad line of anti-infective products, including oral, IV and topical antibiotics. Dr. Patou is a member of the Board at Xenon Pharmaceuticals. He has held a number of academic appointments at University College & Middlesex School of Medicine in London and holds B.Sc., M.B. B.S. and M.D. degrees from University College London.
Steven M. Rauscher
Mr. Rauscher has been a director since 1993 and joined the Company full-time as President and Chief Executive Officer in 2000. Before joining Oscient Pharmaceuticals, Mr. Rauscher spent 18 years at Abbott Laboratories, serving in a variety of key leadership positions including Vice President for Corporate Licensing; Vice President of Business Development; Vice President of Sales U.S. Pharmaceutical Products Division; Director of Strategic Planning for Pharmaceutical Products; and General Manager Abbott West Indies. Following his time at Abbott, Mr. Rauscher served as CEO of AmericasDoctor, a company that provides clinical research and marketing services to the pharmaceutical industry. Mr. Rauscher currently serves on the boards of directors of Acorda Pharmaceuticals and Target Discovery, Inc. Mr. Rauscher holds a M.B.A. from the University of Chicago.
William S. Reardon
Now retired, Mr. Reardon, who holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and is a certified public accountant (CPA), was Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) where he led the Life Science Industry Practice for New England and the Eastern United States. His responsibilities at PWC included supervising teams conducting client audits and serving as a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Consulting Partner, which required him to work closely with SEC staff. Throughout his career, Mr. Reardon has been a highly visible member of the life sciences community, a frequent speaker at industry conferences, and an active member of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) and the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council (MBC). Mr. Reardon currently serves on the boards of directors at Idera Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Synta Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Norbert G. Riedel, Ph.D.
Dr. Riedel is a corporate vice president and the chief scientific officer of Baxter International Inc., having served in that capacity since March 2001. He joined Baxter in 1998 as president of the recombinant unit within Baxter's BioScience business. Prior to joining Baxter, he was head of worldwide biotechnology and head of worldwide core research functions at Hoechst Marion Roussel. Dr. Riedel received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Frankfurt in 1983 and was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University from 1984 until 1987. Currently, Dr. Riedel is an adjunct professor at Boston University.
